Agriculture apprenticeship is the ideal way to earn money whilst gaining a nationally recognized qualification. It is offered to youth graduating from secondary and tertiary institutions and who wish to gain skills that improve their employ ability. The program is offered at Latia Agripreneurship Institute (LAI) which a registered and accredited practical training center. The program is very practical requiring the Apprentice to spend 70% of their time in the fields practising and refining what they have learnt in the theory. The course is offered in a modular system and is designed to equip individuals with competencies required to select site, grow horticulture crops, evaluate productivity, post harvest handling and farm management. A candidate will be issued with a record of achievement on demonstration of competence. Certificates will be issued bt TVET, CDACC in conjuction with Latia.
The program is offered for one to three years at a fee of 120,000 per year.
Internship is offered to youth graduating from campus/tertiary institutions with the aim of improving their skills for employ ability. The program is very practical requiring the intern to spend 70% of their time in the fields practising and refining what they have learnt in the theory. The program is offered for 6 months undergoing a very intensive theory and practical training at LAI campus in Isinya after which we link them to the employer.
1. On-site Incubation
On-site incubation targets new farmers who want to “learn the ropes” in a safer environment before they start their “real enterprises”. The Incubatees gets a piece of land that is connected to irrigation water and power and is allowed to use machinery and other facilities on site at a small fee. The Incubatee will then receive regular training on production and management and is also facilitated get inputs and markets for their farm produce. At the end of the incubation period the Incubatee farmer will graduate not only with knowledge and skills but also with a business that they will move and expand at their own site.
2. Off-site Incubation
This incubation program is offered at the farm or the business of the Incubatee. The program is designed to move the small and medium sized farm entrepreneurs toward growth, profitability and sustainability. These farm entrepreneurs are mainly “Telephone Farmers” a term used to describe urbanites who invest in farms back in their villages with the hope of making a viable business out of them. Most telephone farmers are not successful despite making significant investments in these farms. Their farms generally lack a business approach, are badly managed and their production activities are not linked to markets.
LAS offers short courses, seminars and field days for farmers and other Agripreneurs keen on deepening knowledge and skills and learning new technologies and practices. These programs which are offered at our model farm in Isinya or on other suitable locations, cover topics in production, marketing, value addition, labour management, farm financial management, agribusiness investments planning, analysis and certification.
The consultancy services mainly targets projects in agriculture and agribusiness, and it is provided across Africa. The company has a core team of project managers for the project requirements.
